Get the most out of BackMeUp with these essential tips
Don't backup the entire C: drive. Focus on Documents, Pictures, Desktop, Downloads, and specific work folders. Windows system files don't need backing up.
Depending on data size, the initial backup can take hours. Start it when you can leave your computer running (e.g., overnight). For laptops, plug into power to prevent interruption. Future backups are much faster!
After copying files, BackMeUp indexes them for fast recovery. This takes extra time during the first backup but is much quicker in future backups. This indexing is what makes file recovery possible!
OneDrive, Google Drive, and Dropbox folders are automatically excluded. They're already in the cloud! Junction points and shortcuts to other drives are also skipped to prevent loops.
Consider backing up to both cloud storage AND an external drive. The 3-2-1 rule: 3 copies of data, 2 different media types, 1 offsite copy.
BackMeUp is digitally signed with a verified code signing certificate for your security. Windows will recognize it as a trusted application from a verified publisher.
Periodically try restoring a file to verify your backups are working. Check your backup destination has enough space and isn't running out of room.
Make sure your selected folders will fit on your backup destination. Use the folder selection preview to estimate total size before starting your first backup.
BackMeUp automatically saves progress every 100 files during indexing. If power fails during a backup, already-indexed files are preserved and the next backup will resume where it left off. No need to re-copy everything!
If you use a BitLocker-encrypted external drive for backups, set it to auto-unlock on your computer. Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run: manage-bde -autounlock -enable D: (replace D: with your drive letter). This way BackMeUp can access the drive automatically without prompting for a password.
Pro users can add "BackMeUp and Shutdown" to their desktop right-click menu. Perfect for end-of-day workflows - just right-click your desktop, select the option, and BackMeUp will run your backup and automatically shutdown your computer when complete. Never forget to backup before leaving for the day! Enable this in Settings → PRO Features.
Yes! BackMeUp is digitally signed with a verified code signing certificate and recognized by Windows as a trusted application from a verified publisher. Your download is automatically scanned by Windows Defender, and the installer is signed to ensure it hasn't been tampered with. You can verify the digital signature by right-clicking the installer and selecting Properties → Digital Signatures.
Cloud services charge monthly fees and limit your storage. BackMeUp is a one-time purchase with no storage limits - you control where backups are stored (external drive, network drive, or even your own cloud storage).
Yes! BackMeUp works with any storage Windows can access - external drives, network drives, USB drives, or even cloud storage folders (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox).
After 7 days, you'll need to purchase a license to continue using BackMeUp. Your backups remain intact, but the software will stop creating new backups until licensed.
Instead of copying ALL files every day (traditional backup), BackMeUp only copies files that changed. Since most files don't change daily, this saves massive amounts of space while still giving you complete version history.
Absolutely! BackMeUp's recovery interface lets you browse all your files and see every version by date. Click any version and restore it with one click.
BackMeUp stores files in their original format on YOUR chosen storage. For encryption, we recommend backing up to an encrypted drive (BitLocker on Windows, or encrypted external drives).
All license holders receive email support. We typically respond within 24 hours on business days. Pro and Business license holders get priority support.
Yes! Simply uninstall from the old computer and install on the new one with your existing license key. Your backups can be copied to the new location as well.
