Privacy First: BackMeUp is designed with privacy as a core principle. Your backup data never leaves your computer. We do not collect, transmit, or store your files.
1. Information We Collect
Machine ID (For License Activation Only)
When you activate a license, we collect:
- Machine ID: A unique identifier generated from your computer's hardware
- Purpose: To prevent unauthorized license sharing
- How Generated: Based on your computer's hardware UUID
- Storage: Stored locally on your computer only
We DO NOT Collect:
- ❌ Your name, email, or personal information (for offline licenses)
- ❌ Your files, documents, or backup data
- ❌ File names, paths, or directory structures
- ❌ Usage analytics or telemetry
- ❌ Location data
- ❌ Browsing history or behavior
2. How BackMeUp Works (Offline-First)
BackMeUp operates entirely offline:
- ✅ All backup data stays on your computer
- ✅ No files are uploaded to our servers
- ✅ No internet connection required after activation
- ✅ Your backup destination is under your control
3. License Activation
License activation uses an offline system:
- You purchase a license and receive a license key
- You enter the license key and your Machine ID on our website
- Our website generates an activation code (using client-side JavaScript)
- You enter the activation code into BackMeUp
- BackMeUp verifies the code locally (no internet required)
Important: The activation process happens on your computer. We do not receive or store your Machine ID on our servers.
4. Data Storage
On Your Computer:
BackMeUp stores the following locally:
- Backup database: Metadata about your backups (file names, versions, dates)
- License information: Your license key and activation status
- Settings: Your configuration preferences
- Logs: Backup operation logs for troubleshooting
On Our Servers:
We DO NOT store:
- Your backup files
- Your personal data
- Your usage data
5. Third-Party Services
BackMeUp does not integrate with third-party analytics, tracking, or advertising services.
Components We Use:
- Python: Programming language (runs locally)
- PyQt6: User interface framework (runs locally)
- SQLite: Database engine (runs locally)
- Robocopy: Microsoft Windows utility (runs locally)
None of these components transmit data externally.
6. Website (back-me-up.com)
What We Collect on Our Website:
- Basic web server logs: IP address, browser type, pages visited (standard web hosting)
- Purpose: Security, troubleshooting, and performance monitoring
- Retention: Logs retained for 30 days maximum
Cookies:
- We use minimal cookies for website functionality
- Session cookies for password-protected areas
- No tracking or advertising cookies
7. Data Security
Your Backup Data:
- Stored on your chosen backup destination (external drive, network drive, etc.)
- Security depends on your chosen storage method
- We recommend using encrypted storage (BitLocker, encrypted drives, etc.)
License Information:
- Stored locally on your computer
- Protected by file system permissions
- No transmission to external servers
8. Your Rights
You Have the Right To:
- Access: View all data stored by BackMeUp on your computer
- Delete: Uninstall BackMeUp and delete all associated data
- Export: Your backup data is stored in standard file formats
- Control: Choose where backups are stored and when they run
9. Children's Privacy
BackMeUp does not knowingly collect information from children under 13. The software is intended for general audiences.
10. International Users
BackMeUp works worldwide. Since all data is stored locally on your computer, there are no international data transfer concerns.
11. Changes to Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on our website with an updated "Last Updated" date. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
